10 Questions to Ask Before Submitting A Proposal

  1. What type agency is eligible to apply for the grant (i.e. 501(c) (3), schools, government)?
  2. What geographic area must the project cover?
  3. What type of project will the funder support (i.e. after school, health care, capacity building)?
  4. Who is the target audience (i.e. youth, elderly, single moms, high school drop outs)?
  5. How many awards will be made?
  6. What is the average award?
  7. When is the application deadline?
  8. Is the application due by a certain time?
  9. What are the reporting requirements?
  10. What are the required attachments?

10 Commandments of Grant Writing

  1. Thou shall not write alone.
  2. Thou shall not adjust your mission.
  3. Love other youth as you love your own.
  4. Honor thy funder.
  5. Thou shall have a back up plan.
